Adrienne Macki

Associate Professor, Dramatic Arts


Adrienne Macki Braconi is a theatre historian and dramaturg. She specializes in African American drama and performance, early 20th century American drama, and gender and performance. She is the author of Harlem’s Theatres: A Staging Ground for Community, Class, and Contradiction, 1923-1939 (under contract at Northwestern University Press). Her other publications include an essay in The Cambridge Companion to African American Theatre, a chapter in Women in the Arts in the Belle Epoque: Essays on Influential Artists, Writers and Performers, contributions in the Encyclopedia of Ethnic American Literature, and essays in Theatre Symposium, New England Theatre Journal, Journal of American Drama and Theatre, Theatre History Studies, and Puppetry International. Her next monograph, tentatively titled Enacted Violence: Materiality, Cultural Memory, and African American Performance, examines the significance and affect of enacted violence in African American drama.
