Panel featuring Erez Manela (Harvard), Fakhreddin Azimi (UConn), and Cathy Schlund-Vials (UConn)
UConn American Studies is convening this panel in order to address the current status of the United States in the world, and in historical perspective. The three panelists will consider questions such as: what is the perception of the United States in other parts of the world at the current moment, and how has that perception shifted (if at all) in recent years? If we are to speak of the United States as an “empire,” what is that status of that empire? How do current policymakers in this country seem to be shifting their ideologies and practices vis-à-vis the world outside U.S. borders, and in what ways have their views and actions been largely the same as their forebearers?
